CALIFORNIA FAITH FOR EQUALITY

MISSION

To educate, support and mobilize California's faith communities to promote equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and to safeguard religious freedom.

PURPOSE

In order to secure equality for all Californians and maintain current freedoms for LGBT people, clergy and lay leaders throughout the State are coming together to form one, united and powerful voice for communities of faith who support equality for LGBT people. We will achieve our mission through grassroots organizing that will educate and identify supportive clergy, congregations and laypeople. Together, we can defeat any attack on the LGBT community and build long-term power for a statewide religious community that is committed to equality.

The voices of informed, trained, and coordinated religious leadership and faith communities are crucial to acheiving equality for LGBT people. The California Faith for Equality coalition will help secular LGBT leadership understand and access these faith communities, while also helping clergy and congregations, some of whom may not have the support of their denominational bodies, to become effectively engaged in the fight for equality.

In partnership with Equality California (EQCA), the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (The Task Force), the Pacific School of Religion and the Equality for All campaign, California Faith for Equality is implementing a statewide organizing and educational strategy to identify, train, mobilize, and publicize clergy and congregations supportive of the freedom to marry. This effort will set the foundation for an awareness-raising campaign dedicated to educating and mobilizing faith communities to support LGBT people and religious freedom.
