Interfaith Amicus Brief of 2009

In January 2009, California Faith for Equality, in partnership with the Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry, the California Council of Churches and supportive law firms, submitted an interfaith amicus brief advocating that the California Supreme Court overturn Proposition 8.

While previous related amicus briefs boasted over 400 signatories, this brief heralded a joinder application that included as signatory nearly one thousand faith communities and faith leaders with constituents in California.

Interfaith Amicus Brief of 2007

In September 2007, California Faith for Equality worked with the Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry and supportive law firms to submit an Interfaith Amicus (Friend of the Court) Brief to the California Supreme Court, which heard oral arguments (video and audio recordings) on the freedom to marry on March 4th, 2008.

The Brief, an evolution of the Interfaith Amicus Brief of 2006 submitted to the Appellate Court, was signed by over 400 clergy and congregations from a diversity of faith traditions. Of the over 30 amicus briefs submitted to supplement this case, it was the only amicus brief mentioned during oral arguments.

Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act (AB43 - Leno)

Vetoed by Governor Arnold Schwarzeneggar, the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act (AB 43) passed the Assembly and the State Senate during the Summer of 2007. Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed the bill, citing the freedom to marry cases before the California Supreme Court. You can read his statement here.

Thank you to all congregations and individuals who sent letters to their representatives. Due to your efforts and those of our coalition partners, the bill passed both houses by a greater margin than its original passing in 2005.
